Buying a car at auction
It can be daunting coming to an auction for the first time, but rest assured we will do everything that we can to make the process simple, easy, and above all great value for money.
Whether you intend to purchase a car, motorbike or van, our dedicated team will help guide you through the entire process. We have put together this guide to help you understand what to expect when buying a vehicle through Bawtry Motor Auction.
Using our website
We have created this website with you in mind, and we hope you find it functional and easy to use. We image all of our vendor's vehicles and display them on the vehicle sales catalogue area of the website. From this part of the website you can search our entire catalogue and refine your results with filters for make, age, mileage, colour, fuel & transmission. If you wish to search for vehicles from specific vendors or sales please use the new sales calendar vehicle search.
Before the sale
- Review the vehicles on our website.
- Select the vehicles that you desire and print a full or partial catalogue
Attending the auction
- Acclimatise yourself
- If you have not been to an auction before, we recommend that you come and watch one before you intend to buy. The speed at which vehicles are sold can seem scary at first but you will find that you soon get used to it
- Turn up early
- We recommend that all buyers arrive in advance of the auction start time. This gives you time to inspect your chosen vehicles and ask any questions that you may have.
- Walk the vehicles
- We recommend that you select at least two vehicles that fit your criteria. Have a good look around the vehicles and decide on the amount that you are prepared to bid. Remember that in addition to the hammer price there are additional charges detailed below
- Listen to the auctioneer's description
- The auctioneers will start by setting out the terms and conditions of the sale. Thereafter the auctioneer will describe the lot. Listen carefully to the auctioneer's description; if there have been any changes to the description of the lot the auctioneer will detail them now.
- Bidding on a vehicle
- To bid on a vehicle please clearly raise your hand or catalogue. Make your bidding clear to the auctioneer and don't leave it until the last minute.
- Sold outright
- When the hammer falls the auctioneer will describe the purchase as either 'sold' or 'provisional / subject'. Sold means that the vehicle has sold to you, you will need to come forward and leave a deposit which will be allocated against your purchase. It will shortly be available for you to pay for.
- Sold provisional / subject
- This means that the vehicle has not reached the vendor's reserve price, you will need to come forward and leave a deposit will be provisionally allocated against it while we submit your bid. In this case please keep an eye on the provisional bid screens and come to the counter when requested. When we have contacted the vendor one of two things will happen, either the vendor agrees to your bid and the vehicle becomes sold, or the vendor will state the price at which they will sell, in this case we will conduct negotiations with the vendor on your behalf.
Payment and collection
- Go to the cashier's office
- Once your purchase has been confirmed you need to go to the cashier's office where they will be preparing your documentation and invoice. Once the vehicle is paid for in full you will be handed your documentation and invoice. Please check these carefully as it is not always possible to rectify issues once you have accepted the documents.
- Collect your keys
- Now that the vehicle is paid for you can collect your keys and take the vehicle away. Please remember that it is your responsibility to ensure that the vehicle is road legal and that you have the correct documentation before it is driven on the road.
